Are We Heading For a “Laika” Moment?
Yes, while most of us were too young to remember,
It was in October of 1957 that the USSR put Sputnik 1 into space.
And, in November of 1957, “Laika” never came back from space.
NEEDED:
A new ‘tipping point’ that will once again wake up the country.

While these shots into space showed that the USSR was ahead of America in the “space race”, it took Laika’s
launching into space to wake up the country.
Somehow, seeing a cute little dog, a live animal, launched into space was the shock that it took to wake us up,
and to make us realize the Russians were winning the technology war, while America was busy trying to put “two
cars in every garage”, more toasters in each house and concentrating on protecting General Motors and General
Electric (where ‘Progress was their most important product’) and others.
(Do you remember “What is good for General Motors is good for America”? It was a ‘classic slogan’ of the
1950s.) It took the government sponsored NASA to break us out of that kind of thinking.)
Students had become lethargic. Engineering was difficult. Everyone wanted an easy 9-5 job with an early
pension.
But, it suddenly dawned on us, if the Russians could conquer space, they could conquer us. And, if a dog can be
sent into space, people would soon follow.
America woke up! Kennedy was elected president and challenged the nation to “put a man on the moon by the
end of the decade” (1969).
We worked together to meet that challenge. New engineers and scientists were “minted”. Much new technology
was spawned from that effort. America was first to the moon.
America had a new beginning.
Russia and China are about to ‘shock us’ with a new ‘Sputnik / Laika moment’ in new unlimited clean fuels
technologies. Yes, they were invented here, but in our lethargy and efforts to protect existing infrastructures and
vested interests, we are losing the race to other countries, who “borrowed” their starting points from our
technology lead of past decades.
What will be the “Sputnik moment” that will wake us up this time?
When will we, as a nation, wake up and realize we are being misled by our elected officials and lobbyists about
our own capabilities?
When will the ‘youth-of-America’ begin to realize we have foisted unnecessary ‘oil wars’ on their backs, and sold
their future prosperity, while they were playing “war” on video games?
Sooner-or-later, ‘the piper must be paid’.
We will pay in a lowered standard of living, control by more advanced nations, and worthless dollars.
IT NEED NOT HAPPEN!
We are seeing hydrogen fueled cars timidly coming into the U.S. from Asia and Europe. Timidly coming yet, as
they have just gone through the ‘trauma’ of the “Shock & Awe War”, widely viewed throughout the world as an oil
war. This led them to believe we are still a nation controlled by the fossil fuel industries.
It appears these nations are electing to go forward on their own, while trying not to offend the dominant U.S. fossil
fuel industries that still control world-wide oil distribution and fueling infrastructures.
Laika; Come back from space. WAKE US UP, --AGAIN!
We have become a nation falling far behind other industrial nations in education, technology, healthcare, and
other fields of endeavor, -- while ‘protecting’ vested infrastructures and attempting to keep the students / voters
“entertained” in the hopes they won’t notice the conquest and decay that is taking place from within.
Yes, this nation has proven time-and-time again, that we can soon harness our creativity and gain a leadership
role again.
Yes, President Kennedy was assassinated, apparently for challenging the “military-industrial complex” that
President Eisenhower warned against. But, we need a new ‘challenge’ of the import of the “moon shot”. But, this
time, we must face the enemy within!
NOW, we need NAFIATT (New Advanced Fueling Infrastructures And Transportation Technologies) to operate
independent of the political system, and bring the country back into the technology lead again.
Laika, will you come back and Help? (maybe from the bowls of a planet in turmoil?)
